Stadiums in Delhi
The stadiums of Delhi count amongst the best in the country and give almost all the world-class facilities. In fact, some of the major international sporting events have been held at New Delhi stadiums. A brief description of the various stadiums in Delhi is given below.
Yamuna Sports Complex:
Yamuna sports complex is located in East Delhi and has hosted Table Tennis and Archery events in Delhi’s 2010 Commonwealth Games. The foundation stone of this complex was laid by late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi on 13th June, 1989. The complex offers facilities for multiple sports for East and Northeast Delhi. The archery stadium has a semicircular building with tensile fabric roofing.
Ambedkar Stadium:
Ambedkar Stadium was established specially for football. The stadium offers a seating capacity for over 20000 people. The stadium had hosted the Nehru Cup International Football tournament in 2007. The nearest Metro station to the stadium is Pragati Maidan.
Shivaji Stadium:
Shivaji Stadium is located in the heart of Delhi city. The stadium is famous for hockey. The nearest Metro station to the stadium is Rajiv Chowk. It is now used as a bus terminal in Connaught Place.
Ferozshah Kotla Stadium:
This stadium is the hosting ground for major cricketing tournaments in Delhi. It was built in 1883 at the request of local people. The first Test match was staged here in 1948. Ferozshah Kotla Stadium is situated at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
Talkatora Stadium:
This stadium is a unique piece of architecture with an elegant look. It has hosted Delhi 2010’s boxing events. It has multiple facilities which include acoustic ceiling of dome, scoreboard, video screens and sports lighting and a number of environment friendly material and energy efficient devices have been used to make it a green building.
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium:
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was the main venue for the 9th Asian Games in 1982. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is situated near the central government offices (CGO) complex in the Lodhi Road area. It is an all-purpose sports complex and has hosted many sports events. The opening and closing ceremonies of the XIXth Delhi Commonwealth Games was held here. The stadium has a seating capacity for 60000 spectators.
Thyagaraj Sports Complex:
It has been especially built for Delhi 2010’s Netball competition. It was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs. Sheila Dikshit on 2nd April 2010. It is India’s first ever model green venue built with the latest green building technologies. The stadium has maple wood flooring in the central arena.
Jamia Millia Islamia Cricket Ground:
The Jamia Millia Islamia Cricket Ground is situated in South Delhi. Completed in 1989, it is now rated as the finest playing surfaces in the capital. The grounds have long brick-walled sight screens installed at both ends, making things very convenient for batsmen.
Siri Fort Sports Complex:
Siri Fort Sports Complex is one of its kinds in India. It has hosted badminton and squash events of Delhi 2010 games. The sprawling acres are surrounded by lush green lawns and a mini forest. It is located near the historic Siri fort. It was first inaugurated on 29th March 1989.
RK Khanna Tennis Complex:
RK Khanna Tennis Complex is a tennis stadium located in New Delhi. It has a center court, 6 match courts and 6 warm-up courts. It has a capacity of 5015. It was used as a venue for 2010 Commonwealth Games. It was also the venue for the tennis events at the 1982 Asian Games. It is sometimes also used for India’s Davis Cup matches.
Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium:
The Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium is located in the Indraprastha Estate in the eastern part of the capital. It is one of the most important Delhi Sports stadiums. Having an expanse of 102 acres, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium has a seating capacity of 25000 people. It was built for the purpose of Asian Games. It plays host to sport events like volleyball, badminton and many such sports of their kind.
Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range:
It is located on South Delhi Ridges near the historic Tughlakabad fort (to its north) and Surajkund Lake to its southwest. It has a centrally air-conditioned indoor shooting range with 80 shooting points.
Major Dhyanchand National Stadium:
Major Dhyanchand National Stadium is a field hockey stadium at New Delhi. It served as a venue for the first Asian games in 1951.The Stadium was built in 1933 as a multipurpose stadium. It was a host venue for the 2010 men’s hockey world cup. It was also the hockey venue of the 2010 commonwealth games.
