Indira Gandhi International Airport is located in Delhi, the capital of India. It was named after the former Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It is the busiest airport in South Asia. It along with Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, handles more than half of the air traffic in South Asia. The airport serves as the primary civilian aviation hub for the National Capital Region of India.
The newly world-class Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3 was inaugurated by the prime minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh on 3rd July 2010. It is the world’s fifth largest Airport. It will become operational from July 14 when all foreign airlines shift their base from the existing Terminal 2.
Touted as world’s largest and most modern airport in the world, it can cater to 34 million passengers in a year. The cost of the newly constructed terminal is around Rs. 6,750 crores. It has a capacity to handle 12,800 bags per hour with 6.4 kilometers of conveyor belts. It features more than 100 travelators or automated passenger walkways the first Indian terminal to offer this facility. It has an area of 5.4 million square feet with 78 gates, 97 automated walkways, 95 immigration counters, 215,000 square feet of retail space and parking for 4,300 four wheelers.
